Third In Gold

Kyle’s basketball season came to a close this morning with a win to place third in the Gold Division (best of five divisions)tournament. Here Kyle drives hard to the hoop. He had four points and a pivotal rebound with seconds remaining that helped the team to preserve its one point victory.

Dennis

Today we met Dennis. He is a brave little 12-year old from Honduras who speaks no English. He is in the US for medical treatment having recently lost his left leg to a lawn mower accident. I was so proud of the way Nicolai reached out to and connected with Dennis. Despite the language barrier, we all spoke the universal dialect of soccer. Before long we had organized goals in the living room and had a lively match going. Nicolai took great pleasure in presenting Dennis with 8 brand new right-footed shoes which look to be a perfect fit. We also played some home movies of Nicolai playing soccer and I could see in his eyes that Dennis was looking forward to new possibilities. Today, two 12-year old boys from different cultures shared more than a pair of shoes.

Family Math Night

This evening Jeanine is up in New Hampshire on a retreat with her mentoring group. The boys are at the high school basketball game, and I have Maya all to myself. We attended Family Math Night at Willard School, where Maya enjoyed many activities, including pyramid construction with her friend Lydia.

Early Flight

I left the house at 5am to catch a flight to Indianapolis. I am on the Board of Directors for a start-up called Cinetal and we met for an all day strategy meeting.

Blind Taste Testing

Tonight was Jeanine’s family night. She chose a combination of blind taste testing and ping pong. We started with Coke vs. Pepsi (everyone but Kyle could identify the correct soda). We then paused for ping pong during which Kyle, for the first time in his life, defeated his father in a head to head match. We then tested organic peanut butter against processed, butter vs. margarine, and Hershey’s vs. Cadbury chocolate. It was a fun evening and it was amazing how accurate we were at correctly identifying each item.

Passed Swim Test

Maya passed her swimming test today which required one lap of crawl, one lap of back stroke, 30s of back float and 30s of dog paddle. The green bracelet indicates that she can swim at the pool by herself. She is very proud of this accomplishment and had to overcome a great deal of anxiety to complete the test.

PTSD

Jeanine’s reaction to the sight of Kyle’s injuries. Her foot is still recovering from surgery so she spent the day in the lodge reading and knitting.

Laws Of Gravity

Shortly before lunch, however, Kyle built up a little too much speed on a jump and did a face plant when he landed. The Law of Gravity can be a real bitch. He abraded most of his face, bruised his right eye, smashed his lips, and realigned his nose which was bleeding profusely as he was escorted to the medical center.
