Because they are so abundant on our stretch of the river, I rarely think to photograph the great blue herons as they fly in and out of their fishing spots. Given that it rained almost all day, I was happy to catch this fellow as he flew down the river. During migration, great blue herons typically fly at speeds of around 20–30 mph and can cover roughly 200–500 miles in a single day if conditions are good. On a typical day when they’re not migrating, herons usually don’t travel nearly that far — they tend to forage within a few miles of their roost or nesting colony, often moving just a handful of miles between wetlands, ponds, or feeding areas.
